Vivian

Candy

ArtsExhibition Project Lead

Last week we planned our first school-wide art exhibition, with paintings by students from G3 to G 9. The theme of the exhibition was Pop Arts, also known as Popular Arts. It is a style of art that explores popular theme and pop culture to showcase the concept of artistic interpretation, often using socialites, advertising images and popular consumer products as the subject matter. Pop Art is all-encompassing, and the students" work shows a wide range of creative approaches.

I Love My Hometown

Milton Glaser"s Work

Hometown is that place in your spiritual world that you long for, that place that often appears in your dreams. The G5 students created pieces based on their home provinces, inspired by the I Love NY poster created by the famous American graphic designer Milton Glaser.Using graphic decoration techniques to colour and design the names of the provinces, the artwork also incorporates some fabrication techniques, with red hearts fixed to the image as three-dimensional decorations to add a touch of interest.

Moreover, the G7 students" artwork made a link with the G5 ones, showing silhouettes of the characteristic buildings of their hometown by sketching and cutting and rearranging steps, and behind the image they also gave a bilingual introduction to the city, expressing their love for it.

A Tribute to Andy

Andy Warhol‘s Work

G6"s works focused on a remake of a classic work by Andy Warhol, the "godfather" of Pop Art. They worked on two pieces of artwork. One is a packaging design for the classic Campbell"s canned soup and the other is an avatar design of a selected Marvel and DC hero.

Pop culture is very appealing to children and they chose their favorite stars from a wide range of characters to create pop-up style avatars. Utilizing cut-up color boards and cards, stitched up by drawing line, the students were able to create various emotionally rich avatarsto their liking.

Reflecting on Nature’s Link

G8 and G9 students experimented more with the medium of creation and portrayed the world of animals by using different colours of glitter to create their work. Some students started with colour and marvelled at the charm of colour; some expressed their awe of the natural world; others had some philosophical reflections and felt the relationship between man and society.

All of these paintings came from the children"s exploration and reflection on the natural world.

Whimsical Ideas About Art

My work shows a whale that lives in the deep sea, its body combining blue and gold and also incorporating partial gradations of colour. The red of its eyes contrasts with the blue of its body, showing that this whale is ambitious but bound. The golden halo on its back shows its determination to break free. I created this piece to presenttheideathat everyone is the master of their own life, and I hope that people will not be bound by the words of the crowd, but take their own pace and just be themselves.

G8 Student Vivian

I painted a zebra, using different colours of sequins, focusing on the head, showing more colours placed on the head.I put together the outline of its lines, different sides of the colour block, enriching the whole inner image of the zebra, showing more beauty in the zebra, and finally presenting it on my current painting. This art exhibition has given me a deeper sense of the different colour composition. Each person used their own uniqueness to paint a different animal.

G8 Student Candy

My work is called "Green Headed Man". When I was in the art classroom, I saw green pieces of paper in front of me and I used them to create my work. Green is a natural colour, a very attractive colour, a summer colour, so it would look good on a person"s head. The "Green Headed Man", full of summer cheerfulness without losing the natural flavour, is a very handsome man. I think the best thing about my Green Head is that his body matches the green hair so well, like a stool and a table.

My hometown is Heilongjiang, so I painted one of Heilongjiang, and since Hainan is half of my hometown, I painted another one of Hainan. For Heilongjiang I painted a macaron coloured one with a white background card and a hollow heart on top, I used blue on “I”. For Hainan I painted a rainbow coloured one with a dark blue background card and a solid heart, I used a pink on “I”. One is fiery and the other icy, and it is hard to separate my love for them.
